The functional side of Platform Beds

Platform bed frames have a huge variety of function. Some will work with certain mattress types while others will not. Some offer storage capabilities while others lay flush on the ground with no room for your things. These are just a few of the considerations you’re facing so you can decide what type of platform bed will work for you.

What Type of Mattress Will You Use?

Some mattress companies have specific rules regarding what type of foundation they recommend you place your mattress on. If you do not follow these rules your mattress warranty can be automatically void. Memory foam mattresses in particular require that "the mattress be placed on a solid flat surface". If your mattress makes this requirement you will want to either make sure that the platform bed you purchase offers a solid flat mattress foundation or make arrangements to create one. If the platform bed offers slat supports you can purchase a bunkie board (basically a thin boxspring) or purchase a box spring. You can also use a sheet of plywood or similar to create a flat surface. If the platform bed offers no slats or solid platform then a box spring is your only option. If your mattress does not require a flat surface you can place your mattress directly on the slats. Though we are partial to memory foam mattresses, any mattress will work with a platform bed.

Do you require storage?

If your closets are already filled to the brim you may want to invest in a storage platform bed. Storage platform beds incorporate hydraulics that allow you to lift your mattress like the hood of a car to reveal a large protected storage area beneath the bed. You can also purchase a standard platform bed and pair it with low profile plastic bins to that can slide beneath your bed. If this option appeals to you, be sure your platform bed frame will allow you this type of access. If the sides of the bed rest on the floor you won’t be able to take advantage of this option.
